Students will be notified by mail regarding the status of their application. Enrollment in the Certificate Program is offered year round. Applicants must have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent. Students who are currently attending high school and who will be graduating are eligible to apply to the Certificate Program. *The application fee for students in the Studio Based Learning Program is waived.
Registration
Classes are offered to both Continuing Education students and Certificate students through the Office of Continuing Education.
Graduation Requirements
The Certificate Handbook contains course requirements and the sequence of course offerings for each Certificate Program. A checklist for recording completed classes is included for each program. Candidates are required to fulfill all requirements and expectations outlined in the Certificate catalog to graduate from the program.
Attendance / Grades / Evaluations
Students are expected to attend all classes, as success in each course is dependent on consistent attendance. In case of illness, students should notify their instructor. For prolonged illness, contact the Director of Continuing Education. Homework assignments involving studio work, reading, and writing are part of the required curriculum in the Certificate Program. A grade of “C “or higher is required to maintain enrolled status. Students may not advance into upper level classes without completing the specified prerequisite.
Materials and Supplies
Material and supply costs are in addition to tuition and fees and vary from class to class. They are the responsibility of the student. Most materials are available in the Camera Shop and Art Supply Shop on campus.
The Role of Grades and The Grading System
Grades A, B, C, D, and F are used (with plus and minus grades) and are recorded. Grades in the Certificate Program are intended to assess a student’s progress and do not indicate that college credit is awarded.
Portfolio Reviews
During the semester, student portfolios may be reviewed by the Director of Continuing Education, Department Chairperson, or the Interior Design Coordinator to assess student progress in the program. At that time, course recommendations may be made to bring work to a higher level of proficiency.
Health and Saftey
If you are pregnant or have health issues, a note from your physician will be required for all studio classes and must be presented to the Director of Continuing Education to be kept on file. Instructors provide health and safety information for each course.
Leave of Absence
Students may request a leave of absence for up to one year. A Change of Enrollment Status Form must be submitted to the Director of Continuing Education.
Withdrawal
Notification to an instructor is not an acceptable withdrawal. Withdrawal must be made in writing to the Continuing Education Coordinator. Students who do not enroll for one academic year will be subject to automatic administrative withdrawal and must reapply to the program.
Petition to Graduate
Students are required to turn in an Intent to Graduate form to the Director of Continuing Education in September of the academic year in which they intend to graduate.
Graduation
Graduating Certificate students are required to exhibit their works in the graduation exhibition. This exhibition is a culmination of work within the program.
Each student must submit their project for final approval from their advisor. The work may be edited for the show.
This body of work must be ready to be exhibited. Two-dimensional work must be framed and three-dimensional work must be wall ready, if needed.
A certificate of program completion will be presented at the graduation ceremony.
Studio Policies
Registered Certificate students are granted access to the studios during regular studio hours. Studios are not available for use when another course is in session, when they are closed for maintenance, or when the buildings are closed for holiday periods.
Students using studios outside of class time must present a student ID card upon request, and must sign in (and out) at the building’s security desk.
It is expected that any student using a studio outside of class time will clean up after he or she has finished working. The use of studios is for classroom assignments only. No personal or commercial work is allowed at the Institute.
Open studio privileges may be suspended at the discretion of the Director of Continuing Education.
